California DMV Practice Test Guide: Everything You Need to Pass on Your First Try

Taking the CA DMV written knowledge test can be quite daunting, but proper preparation makes a huge difference. Whether you're getting your learner's permit for the first time, moving to California from another state or simply renewing your license, passing it on the first go is the best outcome as it saves you both time and the cost of having to re-take the test.

In this guide we go through the structure of the exam, identify the key areas that are likely to be tested and give you some practical tips to help you get through it.

1. California DMV Written Test Overview

Before diving into study materials, it helps to understand what to expect on exam day for a standard Class C driver’s license:

Number of questions: the test is normally 36 multiple choice (46 for applicants under 18).

Passing score is 30 correct (83% or higher) which means you can't have more than 6 wrong answers.

Format: Available digitally via touchscreens at the majority of California DMV field offices and in hard copy upon request.

2. Key topics covered on the exam

The test is all about safe driving, traffic rules and road signs. Those are the key areas to focus on.

Right-of-Way Rules

Four way stops: the first vehicle to arrive has the right of way. If two vehicles arrive at the same time you yield to the vehicle on your right.

Pedestrians: Drivers must give way to pedestrians in crosswalks (marked or unmarked).

Emergency vehicles: if you see or hear an emergency vehicle with its lights and sirens on you must pull over to the right hand side of the road and stop completely.

Speed Limits

Freeways: the standard speed limit is 65mph unless otherwise posted (some rural freeways will have a 70mph limit).

Residential and School Zones: the default is 25mph in schools when children are present and in residential areas.

Blind Intersections & Alleys: speed limit 15mph.

Alcohol and Drug Laws (DUI)

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC): It is an offence for a driver 21 and over to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or above.

Zero Tolerance Policy: for drivers under 21 the legal limit is 0.01%.

Road Signs and Lane Markings

Solid yellow lines: indicate the centre of a two way road where passing is prohibited.

Broken yellow lines: passing is permitted when safe.

Solid white lines: these mark the lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. Changing lanes across a solid white line is not recommended and in some cases is prohibited.

3. Proven tips to pass your test

Read the Official California Driver Handbook. The entire exam is derived directly from the current California Driver Handbook. You need to go through it at least once to get to know the specific terminology.

Take practice tests. Doing so will get you used to the format of the exam and help you identify your weaker areas. You can take practice online tests at fullpermit.com to build your confidence for test day.

Pace yourself: read every question and every answer choice very carefully before making your decision. Don't rush through them as there are a number of options which are designed to be very tempting if you just skim.
